Armenia’s FX market on October 23 and the week in review: Central Bank summary

Trading on October 23

Armenian banks and credit organisations bought about $35.5 million and sold about $32.4 million on October 23.

According to the Central Bank of Armenia, the weighted average dollar buying rate was AMD 359.90 and the selling rate AMD 362.40. On the interbank* market, $5 million was bought at AMD 360.98 and $4 million was sold at AMD 361.

Euro transactions totalled about €7.64 million in purchases and €8.42 million in sales. The average buying rate was AMD 402.64 and the selling rate AMD 408.44. There were no euro transactions on the interbank market.

On the same day, about 2.18 billion roubles were bought at an average rate of AMD 4.37, and 825.1 million roubles were sold at AMD 4.48. On the interbank market, 425 million roubles were bought and sold at AMD 4.46.

Purchases of other foreign currencies totalled AMD 86.3 million (about $239 thousand) in dram terms, and sales AMD 561.7 million.

In-house purchase transactions of banks and credit organisations totalled AMD 25.49 billion, and sales AMD 19.46 billion. Interbank purchases amounted to AMD 3.70 billion and sales to AMD 3.34 billion.

Foreign currency bought by credit organisations totalled AMD 1.02 billion in dram terms, and currency sold AMD 846 million.

Intrabank and interbank transactions, October 12 to 23

Banks and credit organisations. There were no interbank dollar transactions on October 12, 14, 16, 19 and 20. There were no interbank euro transactions during the period, and no interbank rouble transactions on October 22. The October 23 interbank dollar bar shows purchases ($5 million); sales were $4 million.

From October 5 to 11, exchange offices bought $15.3 million and sold $18 million. The average dollar buying rate ranged from AMD 357.74 to 360.20, and the selling rate from AMD 360.82 to 362.46.

Exchange offices bought €4.14 million and sold €4.99 million. The average selling rate ranged from AMD 405.23 to 406.90.

Over the week, exchange offices bought 1.05 billion Russian roubles and sold 613.9 million roubles. The rouble ranged between AMD 4.01 and 4.09.

Transactions in other currencies totalled AMD 245.5 million in purchases and AMD 221.5 million in sales in dram terms.

Results for the week of October 19–23

Armenian banks and credit organisations bought about $174.1 million and sold about $200.1 million from October 19 to 23.

The weighted average dollar buying rate for the week was AMD 360.13 and the selling rate AMD 362.54. The largest purchase volume came on October 19: $45.4 million at AMD 360.13. On the interbank market, dollar transactions took place on October 21 ($4.5 million at AMD 361.61), October 22 ($1.5 million at AMD 361.25) and October 23 ($5 million bought at AMD 360.98 and $4 million sold at AMD 361). In total, $11 million was bought at an average rate of AMD 361.27 and $10 million was sold at AMD 361.31.

Euro transactions totalled about €55.32 million in purchases and €60.52 million in sales. The average buying rate was AMD 402.61 and the selling rate AMD 408.87. There were no interbank euro transactions during the week.

Over the week, about 9.9 billion roubles were bought at an average rate of AMD 4.29 and about 3.17 billion roubles were sold at AMD 4.42. On the interbank market, 1.78 billion roubles were bought and sold at an average rate of AMD 4.39. Interbank rouble transactions took place every day except October 22, peaking on October 21 at 625 million roubles.

Purchases of other currencies totalled AMD 1.04 billion (about $2.9 million) in dram terms, and sales AMD 14.24 billion, of which AMD 12.58 billion came on October 20.

In-house purchase transactions for the week totalled AMD 128.44 billion, and sales AMD 125.54 billion. Interbank purchases amounted to AMD 11.76 billion and sales to AMD 11.40 billion.

Foreign currency bought by credit organisations totalled AMD 6.20 billion in dram terms, and currency sold AMD 5.75 billion.

Compared with the previous week (October 12–16), dollar purchases fell 19.4% from $215.8 million to $174.1 million, and sales were down 0.8% from $201.7 million to $200.1 million. The average buying rate eased from AMD 360.79 to 360.13, and the selling rate from AMD 362.64 to 362.54.

Euro purchases declined 2.7% from €56.87 million to €55.32 million, and sales 1.2% from €61.26 million to €60.52 million. The buying rate was almost unchanged at AMD 402.61 (402.60 a week earlier), while the selling rate rose from AMD 408.34 to 408.87.

Rouble purchases increased 3.1% from 9.6 billion to 9.9 billion, and sales 6.3% from 2.98 billion to 3.17 billion roubles. The buying rate climbed from AMD 4.21 to 4.29, and the selling rate from AMD 4.33 to 4.42.

Intrabank and interbank transactions, October 19–23

Banks and credit organisations. There were no interbank dollar transactions on October 19 and 20, no interbank euro transactions all week, and no interbank rouble transactions on October 22. The October 23 interbank dollar bar shows purchases ($5 million); sales were $4 million.
