Bitcoin breaks the “September curse” with a 6.4% gain, its fourth positive September in a row

Bitcoin gained 6.4% in September, closing the month higher for the fourth year in a row. According to Binance Research data as of October 2, 2026, it was the second-best September since 2017, and October has historically been bitcoin’s strongest month.
September: a weak month turned strong
From 2017 to 2022 bitcoin ended September lower six years in a row. Since 2023 the pattern has reversed: September has closed higher for four consecutive years, and the 6.4% gain in 2026 trails only September 2024 (+7.4%).
October: historically the best month
Between 2017 and 2025 bitcoin rose in October in seven years out of nine. Over that period October returned 18.1% on average, the best result of any month. This October has also started higher, with bitcoin up 3.6% as of October 2.
The wider market is recovering
Total crypto market capitalisation stands at $2.89 trillion, about 42% above its July low, according to Binance Research calculations based on CoinMarketCap data.
Tokenized real-world assets (RWA) have grown 51.4% since the start of the year, from $25.5 billion to $38.6 billion, according to RWA.xyz, although the segment shrank 0.8% over the past 30 days.
Risks
History does not guarantee a repeat. In October 2025 bitcoin fell 3.9%. Binance Research names a renewed deterioration in market liquidity as the main risk.
